Happy FURst Friday!

The first Friday of every month the new KiSS 102.3 will feature a different dog from local rescue Funds for Pets in hopes of finding forever homes for deserving animals and spreading adoption awareness.

This month’s dog is Dakota. Dakota is approximately 6-7 months old and is a Husky mix. She was found with her three siblings. She sustained an injury to her spine as a very young pup (nobody knows what happened) and has suffered from back end paralysis as she grew. After seeing an Orthopedic Surgeon, her condition was deemed inoperable but the vet sug could give her a chance to see how far rehabilitation and therapy could take her.

Dakota’s foster mom, Shelley, is a massage therapist who has worked miracles with her, as has her husband and her co-workers. She has more use of her back legs now than when she was first assessed. She can stand and run, using her legs, for short periods of time. She can now lift her body in order to go to the bathroom and has enough feeling to know when she needs to go outside. She still dribbles a bit so she is in diapers when she’s in the house, which she tolerates well.

Funds for Pets purchased a wheelchair for her to help with mobility, which she loves. She runs so fast, with and without the chair. She is full of life, energy, spunk, sass, and determination. It is this personality that allows her to be as active and as happy as she is today. She is a goofy pup who adores attention, playing with toys, and treats. She’s great in the car and rides calmly in the back seat in a laundry basket to keep her safe and in place. She will continue in therapy as she grows and a new, bigger wheelchair will be bought for her very soon.

Dakota will remain as a permanent foster through Funds for Pets, given the extent of her condition and needs. Funds for Pets are seeking a foster family who will keep her the entirety of her life, supporting her as required. All supplies, food, and vetting will be covered (for life) by the rescue.

Note, Dakota is great with adults, and is learning to enjoy kids as well. She’s also learning to enjoy other dogs and gently play. She ABSOLUTELY has to go to a home with a fenced yard because of her love to run (and her persistence to chew through leashes/ropes when on a tie-out). She is a fabulous little girl that deserves the best life possible. The rescue is committed to giving her that…they just need to find the right home in which to make that happen.
