supergirl

The very first images of the new CBS superhero show – the first to have a female lead in over a decade – are out!

If you don’t recognize the 26-year-old Glee! actress that’s because her character Marley was definitely not blond. Her new hair matches quite nicely with the costume designed by three-time Oscar winner Coleen Atwood, who designed superhero suits for The Flash and Arrow. She said, “In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today.”

Supergirl also has the executive producer in common with Arrow, Greg Berlanti, along with Ali Adler from the New Normal. Berlanti has said previously that Arrow, The Flash and Supergirl are based in the same universe, so we might see cross over to the other shows, but since Supergirl was picked up by a different network this may not be possible any more.

The show has Kara Zor-El surviving the destruction of Krypton and being raised on Earth by foster parents, the Danvers. Just like Superman, she has to keep her superpowers a secret and it takes a disaster to force Kara to use them for good.

It’s a big cast with Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, photographer and Kara’s love interest; Laura Benanti as Alura Zor-El, Kara’s birth mother; Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, Kara’s boss; David Harewood as Hank Henshaw, a villain in the comic but a government agent chasing Kara in the pilot; Chyler Leigh as Alexandra “Alex” Danvers, Jeremy Jordan as Winslow “Winn” Schott and even Dean Cain in a mystery role.

Superman anyone???

Another “mystery” role will be played by Helen Slater, the original Supergirl from the 1984 movie. They haven’t let slip what character she’ll be but earlier this week Benoist tweeted a picture with Slater saying, ‘Supergirls then and now….@HelenSlaterNYC…is this real life?! So crazy/amazing!!’

The new series premieres in the fall.
